Mid-Century Design Meets High Fashion At New York Fashion Week
New York Fashion Week presented its Spring 2017 shows. As usual, crowds of tastemakers flocked to Manhattan to watch models strut the runway in next season’s hottest trends. Footwear and accessory designer Paul Andrew put a unique spin on the standard fashion week presentation.
For his Spring/Summer 2017 collection, Andrew sought inspiration from the Danish mid-century design movement, particularly the sleek, sculptural, and exquisitely crafted works of Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, and Børge Mogensen. For the palette, Andrew turned to the serene Nordic landscape as well as the vibrant Copenhagen waterfront.
For the unveiling of his most recent collection, Andrew teamed up with Lacy Anderson of The Exchange International—a Houston- and Detroit-based gallery specializing in important twentieth century design. Andrew’s streamlined and beautifully proportioned designs appeared alongside masterpieces by a host of mid-century design masters, including Paul Evans, George Nakashima, and Harry Bertoia, illustrating how fashion and furniture both strike a fine balance between form and function. Anderson says, “Combining Paul Andrew’s work with important twentieth century design is a natural fit. Both embody the intersection between art and function, and both show the designer’s unique creative vision expressed as a usable and workable form.”
